Background & Project Goal
Natural Killer (NK) cells are emerging on the filed of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs). Within the manufacturing workflow for generation of the required amount of functional NK cells, the ex-vivo expansion is crucial because the final in-vivo therapeutic efficacy of a cell product depends to a large extent on the starting material and the culturing process.
This PhD work aims at analyzing relationships of process parameters and starting /raw material attributes with growth, cellular attributes and functionality. We will use NK-92 cell line as the basis. You will culture the cells at different conditions in our new cell culture laboratory. You will apply a multitude of analytics, such as cytotoxicity and flow cytometry, to explore the cellular behavior.
We strongly believe that we can use our well-established and reputed tools to properly characterize the NK cell expansion process in terms of kinetics and physiological fingerprint. This PhD therefore is a translational opportunity to use our tools of experimental design, methodological approach on NK cell ATMP processes and therefore establish novel scientific platform knowledge for NK cell lines.
Master in Bioprocess Technology, Biotechnology, Process Engineering, Microbiology or similar
You should have:
- Experience in cultivation of small-scale cell cultures
- Interest to combine analytical methods and bioprocess technology
- Curiosity and patience to transfer established methods to the emerging field of ATMPs
- Independent, self-motivated and highly analytical
A superior command of English is required. Furthermore, you should be accustomed to work in an international team, be scientifically interested and able to respect tight project timelines
Time-frame & Salary
The monthly minimum wage is currently € 2’237,- (14x per year), before tax at a 30 h/week employment. Applicants have no claim for reimbursement of travel costs arising from the recording process. The university aims to increase the proportion of women especially in scientific personnel and encourages qualified women to apply.
This PhD position starts on April 1st, 2022 and is scheduled for 3 years.
